Airbag Method / Gauge Change All in 1 Instructions

For the main gauge cluster, follow these directions. Note: the mileage reset is a PITA. Just take some pliers to it, and PULL HARD!!!
http://www.geocities.com/m_pro/gtoweb/howto/howto5.htm

To release the glove box, follow these directions. Note: do not completely remove the glove box, just let it hang down.

For the airbag removal, follow these instructions in this first post
http://www.3si.org/portal/forums/sh...e+gauges+airbag

Appropriate items are circled in red.

Once the glove box has been dropped, you need to remove these 2 bolts/ 2screws from the airbag

Here they are removed

In the bag is the cord to the airbag. Don't unsnap the two parts, just unclip where it is being held down to the car. The cord is long enough to leave in one piece.

Once you free the cord, you can begin to pull the airbag out.

Here you can see how long the airbag cord is and how it is left in one piece

The airbag can be rested on top of the drop gloved box. Perfectly out of the way

With the airbag out of the way, you can attack the center gauges. Remember, to follow the other directions listed above, so go off of those, and use these pictures as a guide.

For the center 3 gauges, you have to remove 2 screws from the bottom (in red) and you will slide the gauges out to the right where the airbag was (in BIG red)

Prior to pulling the gauges out where the airbag was, you have to separate the plastic covering on the gauges from the actual gauges. You must do this while it is still in stock location. PITA. See picture below. Don't remove felt tape, just pierce it to get to the screws. Picture is when out of the car, just easier to show that way.

You can then pull the main gauges apart from the plastic covering, and slide them out by way of the airbag route. You don't have to slide out the plastic covering, can just leave in stock location. It was removed for the pictures.

Now you are ready to attack the gauges. This is what you are working with in below picture.

You only have to remove the screws on top (at least for the gauges I bought) and slide the new face on, and then put the screws back in. Don't tighten down too hard though.

Ok, the center gauge (oil pressure) is a little funny. It is circled below in red. There is a metal bracket at the very bottom of the gauge that comes loose. In order to not have to worry about this, only loosen 1 screw at a time! i.e. remove top screw, slide gauge face over stock gauge, and then replace that screw, so it screws back into the bracket. Then, tackle the second screw. In the original directions above for airbag removal, Mista Grimm removed screws from the back of the gauge cluster, however, it is not necessary if you just do one screw at a time, and try to keep the metal bracket in place (Note: in picture below metal bracket is NOT in correct place)

Also, in directions above, they had to recalibrate the temperature gauge, because they removed the needle. I did NOT have to recalibrate any gauges. I did not remove any needles. If you remove the temp needle, you WILL have to recalibrate it.

In order to get the wires to sit flush on the new faces,  cut small notches in the plastic gauge housing for them to fit in.

Once you have all of the gauges changed, slide it back through the airbag opening. It takes some time, and a bit of maneuvering, in order to get it to fit in right, and to line up with the plastic covers in the front that you left in there .

Now, just go backwards, and reassemble everything.  You will still need to hook up power to the gauges.

Here are some pictures of the gauges installed:
